Moving to Boerne TX: Setting Up Utilities and City Services

Every time I hand over keys in Boerne, I get the same text a day or two later. "Okay, who do I call for the water?" Totally fair question. Boerne does things a little differently than a lot of the places my buyers move from, so I put together the list I wish I could tape to every new owner's fridge.

This is not a fancy post. It is the practical stuff. Lights on, water running, trash out on the right day, and no surprise notes about the sprinklers.

One City Bill Can Cover a Lot

Here is the part that surprises people from bigger metros. If your home is served by Boerne Utilities, the city itself can be your provider for electric, water, reclaimed water, gas, sewer, and trash. And you get one bill with all of it on there.

That is a nice change if you are used to juggling four or five logins.

The catch is that not every address gets every service from the city. Some homes in and around Boerne are served by other providers, especially once you get outside city limits. So before you assume, check your specific address with the city's customer service team.

How to Start Service

You can apply for service with Utilities Customer Service at City Hall, 447 North Main Street. They also take applications by email at CustomerSvc@boerne-tx.gov and by fax at (830) 249-2580. The phone number is (830) 249-9511.

My advice? Call or email at least a week or two before closing. Ask which services they provide at your address, what they need from you, and what fees or deposits apply to your account. The city's current fee schedule lists an account activation fee, so ask what to expect on your first bill. I do not want you standing in a dark kitchen on move-in night.

Office hours are Monday through Friday, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., and they close at 4 p.m. on the third Wednesday of each month. For weekends, holidays, and after hours, the listed number is (830) 248-1633.

Find Your Trash Day Before the Boxes Pile Up

Moving creates a ridiculous amount of cardboard. I always tell people to look up their pickup day before the truck arrives.

The City of Boerne has an interactive map of collection days where you can type in an address and see your pickup day. As of January 2026, garbage and recycling are collected on the same day. The city's residential collection provider is WM.

Brush and Bulk Pickup

This one is worth knowing if you are clearing out a garage or trimming those big live oaks.

WM's brush pickup runs once a month during the second full week of the month, on the same day as your garbage and recycling. You do not need to call to request it. Just have brush at the curb by 7 a.m. on your collection day. Bulk items are also picked up monthly through WM, so check the city's Bulky Collection page for size limits before you drag that old couch out.

Brush rules are the same for WM and the city. Cut, tie, and bundle it in sections no longer than 5 feet, with pieces no more than 5 inches in diameter.

The city also runs its own separate brush collection during the third week of the month. You have to schedule that one by the last business day before the third week. One city brush pickup per calendar year is free, and each extra one is $30 plus tax on your next utility bill, per the city's Brush Collection page as of November 2026. To schedule, call Customer Care and Billing at (830) 249-9511, option 1, or submit the brush collection request form on the city's website.

Watering Rules Are a Real Thing Here

If you are moving from somewhere wetter, please read this part twice.

As I write this, the city's official water restrictions page says Boerne is in Stage 2 Water Restrictions, which took effect August 7, 2023. The city's water data dashboard also lists the conservation status as Stage 2.

What Stage 2 Means for Your Yard

Under Stage 2, sprinklers and irrigation systems are allowed one day per week, based on the last digit of your street address:

  • 0 or 1: Monday

  • 2 or 3: Tuesday

  • 4 or 5: Wednesday

  • 6 or 7: Thursday

  • 8 or 9: Friday

On your day, watering is allowed from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. and 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. No weekend sprinkler watering. Hand watering with a hose or bucket is allowed any time. These rules also apply to reclaimed water customers.

City ordinance allows citations with fines up to $1,000 per violation, so this is not one to ignore.

One more tip from experience. If your new home has an irrigation controller, ask the sellers (through your agent) how it is programmed. Then reset it for your assigned day the first week you move in. I have seen buyers inherit a controller set for every morning.

My Quick Boerne Move-In Checklist

Here is what I walk my clients through:

  1. Confirm which utilities the city provides at your address.

  2. Apply for service a week or two before closing.

  3. Look up your pickup day on the city's collection map.

  4. Note the second full week of the month for WM brush and bulk.

  5. Set your sprinkler controller for your Stage 2 day.

  6. Save the after-hours number, (830) 248-1633, in your phone.

That is it. Not glamorous, but it makes the first week so much smoother.
